Keeping Busy in Quarantine

It has been a touch over 5-weeks since the Colorado COVID-19 quarantine started, on my birthday, March 15th (thank you, virus). I’ve always tried to keep myself busy, and sitting at home all day, every day is a challenge. It’s even more challenging seeing a bunch of great spring snow storms drop a load of powder in the mountains and not be able to go ski. But that’s a whole other thing.

What have you been up to during the quarantine? Any creative ways to pass the time? Here are some things I’ve been up to:

Learning Website Design and Re-Imagining the RMFF Site

I wasn’t liking how the first version of the RMFF website was coming together. After consulting a friend in the web design industry, I’m really liking the new look. Website design is a difficult thing, but learning the ropes of website design and hosting a business website has been a fun challenge (albeit with many instances of hair-pulling). There are still some things to clean up, but I hope you like the new look!

Preparing for Casting Instructor Certification

I’ve wanted to get my Fly Fishers International (FFI) Casting Instructor (CI) Certification for years. The preparation for the exam is a journey that takes 1-2 years. During the preparation, I will work on mastering a laundry list of tasks, in addition to learning how to best teach the techniques to individuals of all skill levels. I love that the FFI CI program is based on teaching facts about fly casting, and breaking it down to simple, easy-to-digest elements. I’ll be spending a lot of time at my local park’s field (wearing a mask and social distancing, of course) throwing casts and recording myself.

Tying Lots of Dry Flies for Summer

So many dry flies… so many…

Catching up on Fishing Podcasts

Without a daily commute, I’ve gotten behind on my podcast-listening. My favorites are: Anchored with April Vokey and the Orvis Fly Fishing Podcast with Tom Rosenbauer. Check them out!

Became a Brand Ambassador

I’m now a brand ambassador for Nikwax! I was introduced to Nikwax products during my first job in high school, at REI, in 2000. I’ve been using them ever since and am a huge fan. If you want your gear to keep you happy, then make sure your gear is happy. The first step in keeping your gear happy is to keep it all clean. Nikwax has a product for cleaning, conditioning, and waterproofing for just about everything. Pick some product up and give it a try on your gear — I’m sure you will love it!
